April 2012: Spring Cleaning for your Life

The weather is getting warmer and the days are getting longer – for many people that means more time outside goofing off, but for others this is a sure sign that its time to start spring cleaning.  This can be so much more then just getting grime off surfaces that you haven’t bothered to clean in a while (shelves in the fridge, for example).  This can be a time to de-clutter both your closets* and your life.  So, for this month’s reading list, I am suggesting a collection of “One Year Experiments.”  These authors all tried something new in their lives – some focused on possessions (either going a year without buying anything that was made in China, or reducing the amount of stuff they own), others tried something new (following the rules of the Bible or reading the Encyclopedia), while others considered the way they were living (focusing on being happier, or being more like Oprah).   Along the way of course there are amusing anecdotes, and the chance to learn from what others have done.  While these books may not totally change your life, they might inspire you to make some small changes.  Check out:

  • A Year without Made In China, by Sara Bongiorni
  • All My Life for Sale, by John Freyer
  • The 100 Item Challenge,  by Dave Bruno
  • The Year of Living Biblically, by A. J. Jacobs
  • The Know-It-All, by A.J. Jacobs
  • Living Oprah, by Robyn Okrant
  • The Happiness Project, by Gretchen Rubin
  • The Big Year, by Mark Obmascik

* It would be a shame here if I didn’t take the opportunity to drop  the name of my favorite de-cluttering book: Clutter’s Last Stand.   For those of you who take”Spring Cleaning” more litterally.
