Death Comes to Pemberley, by P.D. James (2011)
A popular sequel to Pride and Prejudice, written in 2011, it took me months to get this book at the local library. The prologue helpfully recaps P&P, and the story opens at Pemberley, where Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy and the whole household are preparing for a ball. Jane and Mr. Bingely have recently arrive and teh household is about to turn in when a coach comes tearing up to the house on a bitter night. Lydia is distraught and Wickham, her husband is in
trouble.
The ball is cancelled and the household in thrown into disarray, bu the consequences of that night will play out over months. The true events of the evening are of course unveiled at the end in a complicated twist of events smack out of a Mrs. Marple novel. The only thing missing is a charming detective.
