Nation

Nation, by Terry Pratchett (2008)

Terry Pratchett’s novel about an island in the Great Pelagic Ocean (NOT the pacific, as the end notes make clear – this is an alternate history of the 1860s).  This island has been all but swept away by a giant wave, leaving only Mau, a young man, and Daphne, a girl who’s ship was swept ashore by said wave.  Together they begin to reestablish a nation on the island, and build a society as they are joined by survivors from other islands.

Like the standard Terry Pratchetts, this book combines sarcasm and humor in a universe that, although “parallel” to ours, is pretty damn similar.
